The Jefferson Lift and it's short range version, the Kennedy Lift, are both a type of deadlift. It is sometimes known as the Straddle Lift.
The lifter straddles the barbell. Instead of facing straight ahead, he is facing more to one side. The bar is gripped with an opposing grip, except one hand is in front of the lifter and the other hand is behind him. The barbell is deadlifted and returned to the platform at the referree's signal.

The Kennedy Lift is performed with the barbell raised up on blocks. It is a short range Jefferson Lift.

The Jefferson Lift works the thighs more than the regular deadlift. It can be used in place of squats to develop the legs. In bodybuilding circles it is known as the Straddle Squat.
